Moscow - the Heart of Russia:
Moscow was Russia's capital before Peter the Great moved the capital to his new city, St. Petersburg. But Moscow never lost its intensity or spirit - one that has inspired authors and poets, ensnared the nobility with its charms, and proved to be the center of Soviet mystique during the Cold War. Moscow represents both the Russia of yesterday and the Russia of today.
It seemed like a lark. When Peter the Great built this city on a swamp, his subjects humoured the Emperor. When he declared it the new capital, they were less amused.
But history has shown that the forward-thinking, Westward-looking tsar was inspired. Gradually, St Petersburg evolved from a swampy backwater into a modern European city, Russia's 'window to the West'.
St.-Petersburg is considered to be the the second city in Russia and can be undoubtfully called Russian capital of culture due to great quantity of cultural places - museums, theaters, libraries, cathedrals and many many more.
